Background:
The NCC was established in India by the Act of 1950. It may be traced back to the ‘University Corps,’ which was established under the Indian Defence Act 1917 to compensate for Army shortages. The ‘University Corps’ was superseded by the University Training Corps in 1920, when the Indian Territorial Act was established (UTC). The goal was to elevate the UTC’s standing and make it more appealing to young people. Officers and cadets from the UTC dressed up as soldiers. It was a crucial step in Indianizing the military. The National Cadet Corps was renamed UOTC in order to be deemed a successor of the University Officers Training Corps (UOTC), which was founded by the British government in 1942.
During World War II, the UOTC never lived up to the British aspirations. This sparked the concept of creating better systems to train more young men in a more effective manner, even during times of peace. A commission led by H N Kunzru advised that a national cadet organisation be founded in schools and universities. The Governor General approved the Soldier Youth Foundation Act, and the Soldier Youth Foundation was established on July 15, 1950.
The NCC syllabus was changed after the conflicts of 1965 and 1971. The redesigned NCC syllabus placed a higher emphasis on acquiring leadership and officer-like abilities, rather than merely being a second line of defence. The NCC cadets’ military training was lessened, and a greater emphasis was placed on social work and youth management.
